The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh was struck early Tuesday by two drones that, according to Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense, caused a small fire and minor structural damage to the building. The attack occurred in the heart of the Saudi capital’s diplomatic quarter, which hosts several other international missions. No injuries were reported among diplomatic staff.

International media and official sources said the drones were suspected to be of Iranian origin, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on targets inside Iran. The embassy issued a “shelter in place” advisory for American citizens in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran, and temporarily suspended services while investigations continue.

The incident comes against the backdrop of widening regional confrontation, with Iran launching missile and drone attacks against several Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, where bases and diplomatic facilities associated with the United States have also been targeted. Saudi authorities condemned the strike as a blatant violation of international law and warned of potential consequences for regional security.

From Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump vowed a response “soon,” though he did not specify the nature or scope of potential measures. The situation remains fluid, with diplomats and analysts cautioning that the risk of broader military escalation in the region remains high if tensions are not contained.
