A Milestone in Travel and Tourism: 5,000 Hotels Worldwide Embrace WTTC's Hotel Sustainability Basics
In a landmark achievement, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) celebrates the adoption of its Hotel Sustainability Basics program by over 5,000 properties spanning more than 80 countries worldwide.
From bustling metropolises in Europe to serene retreats in Africa, and vibrant destinations across the Americas and Asia-Pacific, hotels have eagerly embraced Basics. This independent verification program, overseen by esteemed assessors Green Key International and SGS, sets rigorous standards for sustainability practices.
Designed as a 12-step guide, Basics empowers hotels of all sizes to reduce carbon footprints, enhance energy efficiency, manage water and waste responsibly, and ensure local communities benefit from their operations. Leading global brands like Jin Jiang International Hotels, Louvre Hotels Group, and Accor have joined the initiative, underscoring a collective commitment to sustainability.
The program's expansion into tourism powerhouses such as Japan, the Philippines, and India marks a significant stride. In Japan, the Japan Sustainable Tourism Initiative (JSTi) is piloting Basics with plans for nationwide implementation. Similarly, partnerships in the Philippines and India are set to catalyze sustainable practices across these regions.
Julia Simpson, President & CEO of WTTC, emphasizes the program's impact, stating, "Hotel Sustainability Basics signifies our industry’s dedication to global sustainability. Surpassing 5,000 verified properties is not just a milestone but a testament to our readiness to embrace a planet-friendly future."
Beyond major chains, independent hoteliers and unique accommodations, like Aleph Hospitality and Sanctuary Retreats, are also onboard, demonstrating diverse sector-wide support. Endorsements from global destinations further highlight the program's universal appeal, from the Caribbean to Mauritius, UAE to Ecuador.
As Travel & Tourism navigates towards a more sustainable future, WTTC's Hotel Sustainability Basics stands as a beacon of collective action, uniting industry stakeholders in a resilient and responsible journey forward.
