Russia-Ukraine war: negotiators to meet for talks
Negotiators for Kyiv and Moscow are in Belarus for peace talks but expectations are not high
Russia is interested in coming to an agreement that is in the interests of both sides at talks with Ukraine, Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky claimed on Monday, as officials prepare to meet near the border.
Medinsky said talks were expected to begin at 12pm local time (9am GMT).
Ukraine had agreed to talks with Russia “without preconditions”, the office of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said yesterday.
Zelenskiy did not sound hopeful of success, but said: “Let them try so that later not a single citizen of Ukraine has any doubt that I, as president, tried to stop the war.”
A Ukrainian delegation arrived at the border with Russian ally Belarus for ceasefire talks with Russian representatives, the Ukrainian presidency said. It was not clear whether any progress could be achieved.
Zelensky calls for immediate EU membership
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is urging the European Union to grant his country "immediate" membership.
"Our goal is to be together with all Europeans and, most importantly, to be on an equal footing. I'm sure it's fair. I'm sure it's possible," he said.
In a video statement Zelensky also urged Russian soldiers to lay down their weapons.
"Abandon your equipment. Get out of here. Don't believe your commanders. Don't believe your propagandists. Just save your lives," he said.
The Ukrainian leader also said authorities would release convicts with combat experience so that they could help defend the country.
"We have taken a decision which is not easy from the moral point of view, but which is useful from the point of view of our defences," he said.
