Tottenham oust Manchester City in Champions League
Manchester City 4-3 Tottenham, Raheem Sterling has 94th-minute winner ruled out by VAR in dramatic end to the most incredible match as Spurs beat City on away goals after seven-goal thriller in Champions League quarter-final
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says elimination from the Champions League is "cruel".
Spurs overcame City in a classic encounter at Etihad Stadium to reach the last four of the Champions League for the first time.
Fernando Llorente's goal, bundled in from a corner and confirmed by VAR 17 minutes from time, gave Mauricio Pochettino's side victory on away goals on a night of tension, attacking quality and defensive frailty that ended City and Guardiola's quest for a historic Quadruple.
Guardiola said: "It is cruel but it is what it is and we have to accept it. After 20 minutes we were 3-2 up. In the second half we created a lot of chances and we scored the goals we needed. Unfortunately, it was a bad end for us so congratulations to Tottenham and good luck for the semi-finals.
"I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente's goal is handball, maybe from the referee's angle it is not."
He added: “We missed a penalty in the first leg, we created a lot of chances against a tough team… We made a mistake for the first two goals. But we were honest in the way we played. We tried until the end. What we've done in these two seasons is incredible."
