“Below Saint Lucia”: A New Underwater Experience Combining Art, History and Diving Tourism
Presented to international media and tourism professionals during the Saint Lucia Showcase International, the new experience seeks to transform the island’s heritage into an underwater attraction while expanding Saint Lucia’s tourism offering ahead of the upcoming winter season.
Saint Lucia has officially presented Below Saint Lucia, the island’s first underwater sculpture experience, during a series of presentations for international media and tourism professionals attending the Saint Lucia Showcase International.
The initiative is already taking shape with the first sculptures being installed underwater in the Anse La Verdue area, near Canaries, on Saint Lucia’s west coast. The experience combines art, history, culture and marine conservation with a new attraction focused particularly on diving and the exploration of the island’s underwater environment.
More than a collection of sculptures, Below Saint Lucia is designed to tell part of Saint Lucia’s story beneath the sea. The artworks reference the country’s heritage and different stages of its history, while also paying tribute to prominent national figures.
Among them is Dame Pearlette Louisy, Saint Lucia’s first female Governor-General, as well as references to internationally recognized figures including Nobel laureates Sir Arthur Lewis and Derek Walcott.
A New Attraction for Diving Tourism
Below Saint Lucia adds a cultural dimension to an existing diving offering that includes 22 natural dive sites around the island. The new experience is intended to provide visitors with another reason to explore Saint Lucia’s waters while connecting marine tourism with the country’s history and identity.
The attraction includes different underwater areas, including a Dive Park, Snorkel Park and Conservation Park, with additional components designed to expand access to the experience and incorporate marine education and conservation.
The integration of sculptures into the marine environment also supports Saint Lucia’s broader blue economy approach, linking tourism with marine conservation, education and economic opportunities for local communities.
Saint Lucia Expands Its Tourism Experiences
The presentation of Below Saint Lucia took place during the inaugural Saint Lucia Showcase International, running from September 16 to 20 under the theme “Welcome to Our World… Welcome to Our Communities.”
The event brings together more than 100 international buyers, tourism professionals and media representatives, providing an opportunity to showcase a broader vision of Saint Lucia beyond its traditional beach and resort offering.
Community tourism is also an important part of this strategy. Visitors are being introduced to experiences that connect them with Saint Lucia’s people, cuisine, traditions, local production and natural environment.
Art experiences, farm-to-table activities, sea moss-related products, culinary experiences and adventure offerings are among the initiatives contributing to the diversification of the destination.
Art, Identity and Nature Beneath the Sea
Below Saint Lucia offers a new way of experiencing the destination by connecting its cultural heritage with its marine environment and providing an alternative to traditional sun-and-beach tourism.
With the first sculptures already being installed beneath Saint Lucia’s waters, the experience is turning the seafloor into a new setting for discovering the island’s history, identity and natural environment.
For the international tourism professionals and media attending the Showcase, Below Saint Lucia adds to a destination strategy focused on creating more authentic and diverse visitor experiences while strengthening the connection between tourism, communities and conservation.
