Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that a meeting with U.S. leader Donald Trump could take place “in the near future,” raising expectations that significant decisions aimed at ending the war in Ukraine could be made before the end of the year.

In a message posted on social media, Zelensky said he had been briefed by Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, on ongoing contacts with U.S. envoys. “We are not wasting a single day. We have agreed on a meeting at the highest level, with President Trump, in the near future,” Zelensky wrote. “Much can be decided before the New Year,” he added.

According to diplomatic sources cited by the Ukrainian outlet Kyiv Post, Zelensky is expected to travel to Florida in the coming days with the aim of holding talks with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence. One source said the visit could take place as early as Sunday, December 28, “if everything goes according to plan.”

The announcement comes amid intensified diplomatic contacts between Kyiv and Washington. Zelensky confirmed that he held a phone conversation on Thursday with White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, during which they discussed “new ideas” on how to advance toward peace in Ukraine.

“It was a really good conversation, with many details and good ideas,” Zelensky said in a televised address to the nation. He explained that the discussions focused on possible formats for negotiations, future meetings, and the timeline for a peace roadmap. “Of course, there are still sensitive issues that need to be worked through. But together with the U.S. side, we understand how to ensure that this happens. The coming weeks could also be intense,” he said.

Earlier this week, Zelensky publicly presented for the first time a 20-point peace plan jointly developed by Kyiv and Washington. The proposal includes a non-aggression pact and security guarantees for Ukraine as key pillars of a potential settlement.

However, major unresolved issues remain. Among them are the territorial concessions demanded by Moscow and the future management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian control.

As fighting continues on the front lines, including in eastern regions such as Donetsk, Zelensky’s remarks underscore a renewed push for diplomacy, with the possibility that high-level talks before the New Year could shape the next phase of efforts to bring the war to an end.
