Italy is setting the stage for a record year in tourism, with international visitor spending projected to hit €60.4 billion in 2025, according to data from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). This remarkable figure underscores the nation’s robust recovery post-pandemic and solidifies its position as Europe’s fourth-largest tourism hub.

The WTTC’s Economic Impact Research forecasts that the Travel & Tourism sector will support 3.2 million jobs in 2025—an increase of 100,000 from 2024—and contribute €237.4 billion to Italy’s GDP, accounting for approximately 11 % of the economy. Domestic tourism remains strong, with projected spending of €124.6 billion.

The upcoming WTTC Global Summit in Rome, scheduled for September 28–30, 2025, will convene ministers, CEOs, innovators, and sustainability leaders. WTTC President & CEO Julia Simpson emphasized that Italy offers “a unique experience steeped in history, culture, and exquisite luxury,” and noted that these record-breaking figures highlight the sector’s resilience and passion.

Since 2021, Italy has become one of the few nations with a dedicated Ministry of Tourism, supporting campaigns that promote lesser-known destinations and drive sustainable growth. Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè remarked that hosting the WTTC Summit in Rome for the first time—and for the first time in six years in Europe—demonstrates Italy’s resurgence and renewed leadership on the global stage.

Looking ahead to 2035, WTTC forecasts that tourism will contribute €282.6 billion to Italy’s GDP (12.2 %) and support 3.7 million jobs, with international visitor spending reaching €78 billion. This trajectory represents a significant opportunity for Italian SMEs, poised to thrive amid expanding tourism momentum.
