A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, leaving hundreds feared dead and widespread destruction. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) issued an "orange alert" for fatalities and economic losses. The quake, which occurred at 12:50 local time (6:20 GMT), had its epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city.

The Myanmar military government declared a state of emergency in six regions after severe damage, including the collapse of a vital bridge and possible structural damage to a major dam. A 6.4-magnitude aftershock followed shortly after, worsening the devastation.

Rescue Efforts in Bangkok as Skyscraper Collapses

The earthquake also caused destruction in Thailand, where at least three people died and over 80 remain trapped under a collapsed high-rise in Bangkok. Authorities reported that the 320 workers inside the under-construction building were caught off guard, with 20 trapped in an elevator shaft.

The Thai Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, leading to mass evacuations and the temporary shutdown of metro and light rail services. Officials warned of aftershocks, urging residents to stay outdoors.

A Region Prone to Earthquakes

Myanmar lies on a tectonic fault line between the Indian and Eurasian plates, making it highly susceptible to seismic activity. This earthquake is one of the strongest in recent years, following a 6.8-magnitude quake in 2016. Rescue operations are ongoing as officials assess the full extent of the damage.
