The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has celebrated the significant strides made by the United States in the tourism sector, including the establishment of new goals aimed at enhancing visitor flow and optimizing traveler experiences in preparation for major upcoming global sporting events. The primary objectives include:

  • Reducing visa processing times.
  • Increasing the number of international visitors.
  • Strengthening destination infrastructure for high-profile events like the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.

In a joint statement, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo outlined how their respective departments are working together to streamline visa and passport processes, highlighting the importance of collaboration to boost travel to and from the United States. Both officials emphasized that these advancements not only improve the visitor experience but also create substantial economic benefits.

Increased Visa Issuance and Reduced Wait Times

Blinken reported that approximately 11.5 million visas were issued in 2024, of which 8.5 million were visitor visas, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. Additionally, average wait times have been reduced by 60% from pandemic levels, now averaging around 60 days from the interview date.

For fiscal year 2025, the State Department plans to add one million additional visa appointments to accommodate the high influx of international tourists expected for major sports events. “We’re doing everything possible to ensure that everyone coming to this country for these incredible events can obtain their visas in a timely manner,” Blinken stated.

Online Passport Renewal: A More Efficient Process

Regarding passport issuance, Raimondo highlighted the launch of the new online passport renewal program, which has reduced wait times to between four and six weeks. In fiscal year 2024, 24.5 million passports and cards were issued, thus streamlining the process and ensuring travelers have the documentation they need.

A Boost to the U.S. Economy

Raimondo emphasized the critical role that travel and tourism play in the U.S. economy, noting that the sector supports nearly 10 million jobs and generates approximately $2.3 trillion in economic activity. “Travel and tourism aren’t just fun; they make sense—they’re a real business and support jobs across the United States,” she stated.

Optimistic Future Projections

Visitor numbers to the U.S. have risen significantly: last year, 66 million people traveled to the United States, compared to 50 million the previous year. Raimondo expects that by 2026, the number of international visitors will reach 90 million, representing a full recovery and additional growth from pre-pandemic levels, exceeding the department's strategic goals.

This comprehensive approach to optimizing tourism and facilitating entry processes in the United States reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable growth in the sector, reinforcing the nation’s global competitiveness in tourism and creating favorable conditions for both travelers and the U.S. economy.
