Florida: Milton strengthens to a Category 3 hurricane
Hurricane Milton has reached Category 3 status as it moves through the southern Gulf of Mexico, with sustained winds of 120 mph (193 km/h), according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami. Florida is preparing for what could be its largest evacuation in seven years, as the hurricane advances toward populated areas, including Tampa and Orlando.
Trajectory and Potential Impacts
Milton is expected to make landfall on Wednesday in the Tampa Bay region and maintain its hurricane strength as it moves across central Florida toward the Atlantic Ocean. The Gulf Coast of Florida, still recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Helene less than two weeks ago, is facing another potential catastrophe.
Helene caused significant devastation in the region, with at least 230 fatalities. However, southeastern U.S. states might be less affected this time, as the forecast indicates Milton's impact will be concentrated in Florida.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 51 of the state’s 67 counties and urged residents to finalize their preparations for the storm. “There is no scenario where we don't have major impacts at this point,” DeSantis stated, emphasizing that residents on the west coast and barrier islands should be ready to evacuate.
The state, learning from past experiences like Hurricane Irma in 2017, has deployed measures to facilitate evacuation, including the provision of fuel for vehicles and charging stations for electric cars along evacuation routes. Tampa city garages have also been opened to protect vehicles from flooding.
Kevin Guthrie, Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, mentioned that the state is looking at “every possible location that could serve as a last-resort shelter.”
Ongoing Aid and Preparation Efforts
Up to 4,000 National Guard members are assisting with preparation and debris removal, and personnel deployed to other states after Helene have been called back to focus on Florida’s needs. DeSantis stated that the state is mobilizing all available resources to address this emergency.
FEMA is already working to coordinate aid and preparation efforts for Milton, despite criticism of its handling of previous hurricane responses. Deanne Criswell, FEMA Administrator, emphasized the importance of maintaining trust and calm among residents, despite the misinformation that has circulated.
