Former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday while golfing at his West Palm Beach, Florida, golf club, according to law enforcement officials. The incident unfolded when U.S. Secret Service agents fired at an individual seen carrying a firearm near the premises.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw reported that a suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident, which involved the recovery of a long gun, described as an AK-style rifle with a scope. The suspect, who fled the scene in an SUV, was apprehended in a nearby county. Additionally, law enforcement recovered two backpacks and a GoPro camera near the perimeter of Trump's golf course.

Despite the tense situation, no injuries were reported, and both Trump's campaign and the Secret Service confirmed his safety. The agency is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attempted attack, which occurred just before 2 p.m. local time.

In response to the incident, Republican leaders expressed concern over the security breach. Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, chair of the House Republican Conference, questioned the proximity of the assassin to Trump, referencing a previous attempt on his life in Pennsylvania. She called for a thorough explanation of the events and urged unity behind the GOP nominee for the upcoming general election in November.

Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida echoed these sentiments, praising law enforcement's swift action and condemning what he described as dangerous rhetoric towards Trump. He emphasized the need to address security concerns surrounding high-profile figures.

The FBI, along with local authorities, continues to investigate the attempted assassination, with further updates expected as the investigation progresses.
