The Orange County Convention Center to vaccinate those 40 and older starting Monday

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the age to be eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine will be lowered to 50 starting on Monday.

"I'm going to sign an executive order this morning lowering the age to 50 effective Monday," DeSantis said. "We think we've don't pretty good this week with 60 to 64, but quite frankly, we think that even on current vaccine allotments that opening it up would be good."

Orange County will begin vaccinating those 40 and older at the convention center's vaccination site on Monday.

This was a decision made by Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings on Thursday, stating that the demand from seniors has dropped and that they want to expand eligibility for gunshot injections, rather than expire and go to waste.

"Every day, we have a supply available that does not reach people's arms and they do not want it to just be stored," he explained. "Up to 3,000 per day can receive their vaccination at the convention center. We are experiencing low demand for vaccines given current eligibility criteria for people over 60 years old."

Other eligible groups at the Orange County Convention Center vaccine site are:

Residents 60+ (40 and up can register for appointments starting Monday)
Long-term care facility residents and staff (any age)
Health care professionals with direct patient contact (any age)
All educators and staff in schools/colleges/licensed daycares (any age)
Law enforcement officers, corrections, firefighters, and staff at those agencies (any age)
Extremely medically vulnerable/high-risk
