Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met the chief ministers where he discussed the present Covid-19 situation in the country. After the meet, PM Modi said India is in a better situation while noting a spike in coronavirus cases in some parts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held meetings with chief ministers of states on the coronavirus situation on ground and also Covid-19 vaccine strategy. PM Modi told the chief ministers that states must also start working on establishing the cold chains for vaccine storage. Meanwhile, India’s coronavirus case count has crossed the 91 lakh-mark while over 1.33 lakh people have died already. Several states have moved back to reimposing restrictions in public movement, including night curfews and checks on big gatherings such as weddings etc. Delhi, which saw another spike in coronavirus cases recently, has put curbs on weddings and ordered few markets to shut down on weekends to stop Covid-19 from spreading further. Several top coronavirus vaccine contenders such as Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sputnik V have declared positive results from their clinical trials that have shown effective results against coronavirus. In India, 5 coronavirus vaccine candidates are in advanced stages of development, out of which 4 are in Phase II/III and one is in Phase-I/II trials.
“As a result of joint efforts, today India is in a better situation than other countries when it comes to recovery and fatality rates,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a virtual meeting with CMs.
On Covid-19 vaccine, PM Narendra Modi said, “Safety is as important as speed for us, whichever vaccine India will give to its citizens will be safe on all scientific standards. Vaccine distribution strategy will be chalked out in collective coordination with states. States must also start working cold storage facilities.”
PM Modi urged states to send detailed plans soon on how they plan to take the vaccine to all. "It'll help us in making decisions as your experiences are valuable. I hope for your pro-active participation. Vaccine work is ongoing but I request you there should be no carelessness," the PM said.
The PM asked CMs to work to bring positivity rate below 5 per cent and fatality rate under 1 per cent. “Seeing good recovery rates, many think virus is weak & they'll recover soon, this has led to rampant carelessness... Those working on vaccine are doing it but we need to focus on ensuring that people are alert & transmission is curbed. We've to bring positivity rate under 5%,” PM Modi said.
