US inflation cools again, potentially paving way for Fed to cut interest rates soon
In a promising development for American consumers, U.S. consumer inflation showed signs of abating in October, driven by reduced prices in key sectors such as gasoline, automobiles, and air travel.
That marked the 20th straight month of job growth.
The consumer price index rose 0.9% last month after gaining 0.4% in September, the Labor Department said on Wednesday. In the 12 months through October, the CPI accelerated 6.2%. That was the largest year-on-year advance since November 1990 and followed a 5.4% jump in September.
Payrolls climbed by 943,000 last month after an upwardly revised 938,000 increase in June, a Labor Department report showed Friday. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a 870,000 gain. The unemployment rate dropped to 5.4%.
