Russia faced a fresh wave of condemnation on Monday after evidence emerged of what appeared to be deliberate killings of civilians in Ukraine. Some Western leaders called for further sanctions in response to the alleged atrocities, even as Moscow continued to press its offensive in the country’s east.
Russia’s deputy defence minister, Alexander Fomin, said Moscow has decided to “radically reduce military activity in the direction of Kyiv and Chernigiv” in order to “increase mutual trust and create the right conditions for future negotiations and reach the final aim of signing a peace deal with Ukraine.”
Ukraine President Volodomyr Zelensky appealed for a cease-fire and warned in a bleak statement that multiple cities were under attack. “This night they will storm,” he said.
