Chelsea thrash PSG and lift Club World Cup as Trump and Infantino preside over ceremony
Chelsea FC secured the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after a dominant 3‑0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on 13 July 2025 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. They become the inaugural champions under the new 32‑team format.
Cole Palmer stole the show with two goals (22’, 30’) and an assist for João Pedro’s strike in the 43rd minute. His stellar tournament performance—three goals and two assists—earned him Player of the Tournament honors.
Under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea played with high tactical discipline and Robert Sánchez excelled between the posts. PSG, despite entering as favorites, struggled and saw João Neves sent off late in the game following a VAR-checked foul on Marc Cucurella.
Post-match drama escalated during the awards ceremony: U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino, presented the trophy and medals to Chelsea. Trump remained on the pitch during the trophy lift—despite expectations to step down—drawing boos from the crowd and leaving players visibly unsettled .
Chelsea celebrated the victory wearing “World Champions 25” shirts, capping off a remarkable season that also included the UEFA Conference League title.
Opening ceremony and halftime show: FIFA goes full entertainment
The competition kicked off at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami with an NBA-style opening ceremony featuring performances by French Montana, Swae Lee, and hosts Vikina and Richaelio.
For the final, FIFA introduced a halftime show, drawing comparisons to the Super Bowl. The event featured J Balvin, Doja Cat, Tems, and Coldplay with Emmanuel Kelly, in a production by Global Citizen curated by Chris Martin.
