Mercedes driver takes his third victory of the 2026 season in Baku as six drivers retire, including Lando Norris, Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto

George Russell claimed a dramatic victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, holding off Max Verstappen by just 0.196 seconds after a chaotic 51-lap race in Baku. The Mercedes driver converted pole position into his third win of the 2026 Formula 1 season, but had to survive two Safety Car periods and intense pressure from Verstappen in the closing stages.

Russell made a strong start from pole and quickly established control at the front. Oscar Piastri moved into second at the opening corner, while the Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar began applying pressure to the McLaren cars.

The race changed dramatically after Alexander Albon crashed at Turn 5 on Lap 30, bringing out the first Safety Car. The incident triggered a round of pit stops as the leading drivers made their scheduled tyre changes. Russell retained the lead ahead of Piastri, Verstappen and Hadjar.

The second major interruption came six laps later.

Colapinto crash takes out Gasly and Norris

At the restart on Lap 36, Alpine's Franco Colapinto locked his front tyres approaching Turn 1 and hit his team-mate Pierre Gasly. Gasly was then unable to avoid contact with McLaren's Lando Norris, taking all three cars out of the race.

The incident triggered another Safety Car and dramatically changed the complexion of the race. Colapinto, Gasly and Norris were all classified as retirements.

The FIA stewards subsequently handed Colapinto a 10-second penalty for causing the collision. Because he retired from the race, the sanction will be converted into a grid penalty for the next Grand Prix.

Norris later criticized the incident and called for tougher action against drivers involved in similar crashes, including the possibility of race bans. His comments represented his own view following the incident; the FIA's confirmed action against Colapinto was the 10-second penalty.

Russell survives late Verstappen pressure

Following the second restart, Russell once again controlled the race, but the final stages were far from comfortable.

Oscar Piastri, who had been running in podium contention for much of the race, made a mistake at Turn 1 and dropped down the order. That promoted Hadjar and Charles Leclerc, while Kimi Antonelli continued his recovery after starting 16th following his Q1 crash on Friday.

Verstappen emerged as Russell's main challenger. The Red Bull driver stayed within striking distance throughout the final laps and pulled alongside Russell on the run to the finish line.

But Russell held on.

He crossed the line 0.196 seconds ahead of Verstappen, securing his eighth career Formula 1 victory and third of the 2026 season. Hadjar completed the podium, giving Red Bull a double podium finish.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was the 15th round of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship and was held on Saturday rather than Sunday because of Azerbaijan's Remembrance Day on September 27. The championship now moves to Malaysia for the next round of the season, scheduled for October 2–4.
