President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States will suspend planned bombing operations against Iran for two weeks after direct appeals from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

In a post published on social media just hours before the deadline he had set for Tehran, Trump said the suspension is conditional on Iran agreeing to the “complete, immediate and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz.

"I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double-sided ceasefire," Trump wrote.

The announcement dramatically lowers tensions after days of fears that Washington was preparing a large-scale military operation against Iranian infrastructure, energy facilities and strategic targets if Tehran failed to reopen the crucial shipping route.

Only hours earlier, Trump had warned that Iran had until Tuesday night to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face devastating attacks. The White House had repeatedly described the deadline as “final,” after several previous extensions.

Pakistan emerged as the key mediator in the crisis. According to Trump, conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s military chief led to the decision to delay the operation and give diplomacy one final opportunity.

Trump also revealed that the United States has received a 10-point proposal from Iran and considers it “a workable basis” for negotiations. According to the president, most of the major disagreements between Washington and Tehran have already been addressed.

“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive agreement concerning long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East,” Trump said.

The two-week pause is expected to open an intensive round of negotiations focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending hostilities and reaching a broader regional agreement.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, has remained partially blocked during the conflict, triggering a sharp rise in global energy prices and raising fears of a broader regional war.

Iran has not yet officially confirmed that it accepts the ceasefire conditions. Iranian officials had previously rejected temporary truces and insisted that any agreement must include a permanent end to military strikes, guarantees against future attacks and compensation for damages.

International leaders, financial markets and oil traders are closely watching the next 14 days, which may determine whether the region moves toward a diplomatic breakthrough or returns to the brink of war.
