Terror Attack on Sydney’s Bondi Beach Leaves at Least 11 Dead During Jewish Holiday Celebration
Sydney, Australia — At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured after two gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday, in what Australian authorities have declared a terrorist attack motivated by antisemitism.
The shooting occurred during the public event Chanukah by the Sea, which had drawn hundreds of people to mark the start of the eight-day Jewish holiday. One of the attackers was fatally shot by police at the scene, while the second was arrested and remains in critical condition. Police confirmed that at least 29 people were wounded, including two officers.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said investigators are examining several suspicious items, including improvised explosive devices found in a vehicle linked to the suspects. One of the gunmen was known to security services, though no specific threat had been identified prior to the attack.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the violence as “an act of evil, antisemitism and terrorism,” calling it the deadliest mass shooting in Australia in nearly three decades. State Premier Chris Minns said the attack was clearly intended to target Sydney’s Jewish community.
Chabad, the Orthodox Jewish organization that helped organize the event, confirmed that Rabbi Eli Schlanger, assistant rabbi of Chabad of Bondi, was among those killed.
World leaders, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed condolences and condemned the attack. The shooting comes amid a sharp rise in antisemitic incidents across Australia over the past year, despite the country’s strict gun control laws.
