We experienced an unforgettable tour through the dunes of the Saudi Arabian desert: An unmissable camel ride and a thrilling caravan of 4x4 buggies
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.— The midday sun was still blazing when the vehicle pulled up to the lobby of our hotel in the heart of Riyadh. From there, an adventure would begin—one that, without knowing it, would change us. Twelve hours later, nearly at midnight, we would return with the feeling of having lived far more than a tour: a complete immersion into the spirit of the Arabian desert.
Our destination: Sandstorm Camp, one of several private camps operated by Storm Adventure Company, a Saudi firm that has spent a decade creating extreme experiences in extraordinary natural settings. The one-hour drive to the Zahmia area, next to Nova Resort, was only the prelude: Riyadh’s skyscrapers faded away, and the landscape began to ripple like an ocean of sand.
The Arabian welcome: centuries-old hospitality
Upon arrival, tradition greeted us first. Our host offered us Arabic coffee and dates, a ritual gesture that marks every true welcome in the peninsula. “Everyone who comes must feel our hospitality from the very first minute,” they told us as they handed us cold drinks to prepare us for the long day ahead.
The rhythm of the desert: camels, endless dunes and living silence
Riding a camel is surrendering to the ancient heartbeat of the desert. From its back, the horizon opens endlessly. Time seems suspended. The dunes stretch like golden hills that constantly shift shape, guided by a wind that whispers stories.
Adrenaline unleashed: buggies and dune bashing at full speed
Calm quickly turns into vertigo. The 4x4 buggy caravan forms, and we ride toward the tallest dunes. There begins the experience many come for: dune bashing, that extreme, high-speed driving over steep sand slopes that at times feels like defying gravity.
As the vehicles climb and plunge as if surfing living mountains, our hearts beat to the rhythm of the engine. It’s the perfect blend of adrenaline and freedom.
It was there that we interviewed Abdulrhman Abuabed, Sales Manager at Storm Adventure, who explained:
“This is our Sandstorm Camp. We are Storm Adventure Company, and we’ve been in the market for more than 10 years,” he told us while pointing to the horizon.
“We have more than five camps—mountain camps, desert camps… We do safari trips, hiking trips, extreme activities. Everything here is designed so visitors can enjoy a full day of adventure.”
“In this camp we offer food, activities, relaxation areas and entertainment. We can receive up to 1,000 people in a single day.”
On the star activity, he didn’t hesitate:
“The best experience here is dune bashing with the Jeep Wranglers. It’s pure adrenaline, something people remember forever.”Regarding international tourists, he added:
“Visitors can try traditional things—camels, horses, the desert itself. Also sandboarding, shooting, archery… It’s a full day of activity.”On how the tours operate, he explained:
“We have private tours that companies can customize—from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., as they want. And we have the public tour every Friday, from 1:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.”Before saying goodbye, he offered a simple but sincere message:
“I hope you enjoy your day here. This place is made for people to be happy.”
When the engines finally quiet down, only the wind and immensity remain. The world seems to stop, and you realize the desert speaks too—but in a very soft voice.
Storm Camp: entertainment, sport and culture under the Saudi sky
The adventure continues with even more activities. We tried sandboarding, sliding down the dunes on boards, followed by archery and air rifle shooting, challenges that test precision and calm.
As the sun sets, the camp transforms: carpets, lanterns, music, aromas. The main tent becomes a gathering place as the food begins to arrive—spiced meats, aromatic rice, freshly baked bread, traditional desserts. Everything served bedouin-style, around the fire.
A sumptuous dinner and a sky that takes your breath away
Night may have been the most magical moment. Under a perfectly clear sky, a generous dinner opened the way to an unforgettable finale. Shortly after, an astronomy specialist arrived with a large telescope.
Within minutes, the desert darkness turned into a natural planetarium.
He pointed out constellations, explained how to recognize visible planets, and let us observe—with astonishing clarity—some of the giants of the solar system.
Seeing Saturn’s rings from the heart of the Saudi desert is something that stays with you forever.
Return to Riyadh: the desert travels with us
In silence, close to midnight, we headed back to the hotel. The city lights slowly reappeared, but something within us remained back there—among the dunes, the fire and the stars.
Storm Camp is not just a tour. It is a cultural, athletic and emotional experience that reveals a profound and authentic side of Saudi Arabia.
