Trump and Putin Begin High-Stakes Alaska Talks on Possible Deal to End Ukraine War
In a meeting that could reshape the trajectory of the war in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met today in Anchorage, Alaska. Their arrival at a US military base featured a formal red carpet greeting before the start of the talks.
While the original plan was for the two leaders to meet alone, the agenda shifted to include advisers. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff will join Trump in the discussions, according to the White House.
Trump told reporters that his goal is not to negotiate on Ukraine’s behalf but to bring Putin back to the negotiating table. He stopped short of committing to security guarantees for Kyiv as part of any potential deal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is not attending the summit, stated that Ukraine will continue “counting on America.” Trump suggested that, if the meeting is successful, he may organize a trilateral summit including Zelensky.
