Munich, June 8, 2025 – In a night soaked with emotion and football magic, Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved why he’s one of the greatest of all time. Portugal defeated Spain in a heart-stopping UEFA Nations League final, drawing 2-2 after extra time and sealing the title 5-3 on penalties.

The Allianz Arena witnessed a gripping duel between Iberian giants. Spain struck first through Martín Zubimendi, but Portugal’s Nuno Mendes equalized quickly after a Ronaldo-led move. Mikel Oyarzabal, assisted by a sublime Pedri pass, restored Spain’s lead, yet Ronaldo answered again, slotting in his 138th international goal.

With the match level after 120 minutes, the final went to penalties. Spain’s Álvaro Morata missed, and Rúben Neves buried the decisive spot kick, sending the Portuguese players and fans into rapturous celebration.

“Winning for Portugal is always special,” said Ronaldo, eyes filled with tears. “This is duty fulfilled. It’s pure joy.”

Now 40, Ronaldo left the field with cramps before the shootout but continued to inspire his team from the sidelines. When Neves scored the winner, Ronaldo dropped to his knees and embraced his teammates.

Nuno Mendes, who scored and assisted in regular time and converted in the shootout, was named UEFA’s Man of the Match and praised Ronaldo: “He’s a role model. He helps us so much on and off the pitch. He deserves everything.”

Spain, unbeaten since March 2023 and coming off a dramatic win over France in the semifinals, fell just short. The match, however, was marred by tragedy, as a fan tragically died after falling from the stands late in the game.

With this triumph, Portugal celebrates its second Nations League title and sends a strong message ahead of the 2026 World Cup: they are not just contenders—they’re hungry for more. And Ronaldo, even in his final years, remains the soul of this team.
