The Cannes Film Festival has tightened its already strict dress code ahead of its 78th edition, which kicks off Tuesday, May 13. For the first time, the festival has officially banned full nudity on the red carpet and throughout the venue, a move seen as a direct response to the rise of revealing “nude dresses” popularized by celebrities like Bianca Censori at the recent Grammys.
In addition, oversized gowns—especially those with long trains that obstruct guest flow or block views—are no longer permitted. “The goal is not to regulate attire per se but to prohibit full nudity on the carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law,” a Cannes spokesperson said.
Cannes has long enforced rigid fashion rules: black-tie attire is mandatory for evening premieres, selfies have been banned since 2015, and in past years, women were even turned away for not wearing heels—sparking international backlash. These new guidelines reinforce the festival's commitment to maintaining elegance, order, and tradition on one of the world’s most high-profile red carpets.
