U.S. Travel Industry Leaders Call for Immigration Reform at ALIS
At the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS), prominent figures in the hospitality sector underscored the critical need for targeted legal immigration programs amid growing concerns over stringent border policies. Leaders expressed apprehension that such policies could exacerbate workforce shortages and deter international travelers.
Geoff Freeman, CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, and Anthony Capuano, CEO of Marriott International, voiced unease regarding potential impacts on tourism. Freeman lamented, "We are sending a message to the world [saying] we don't want your illegal visitors, and we're not sure we want your legal ones either," highlighting the industry's apprehensions.
Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta emphasized the enduring challenge of workforce availability, advocating for comprehensive immigration reform to address critical labor shortages. Craig Smith, CEO of Aimbridge Hospitality, echoed these sentiments, urging a nuanced approach that prioritizes legal immigration discussions over strict border security measures.
Rosanna Maietta, CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, acknowledged the complexity of immigration politics while stressing the industry's focus on enhancing seasonal worker programs and improving access to H-2B visas.
Marriott's Anthony Capuano voiced concerns over potential barriers to international travel, citing past policies that hindered cross-border mobility. He cautioned against policies that could reintroduce friction into international travel, detrimental to the industry's recovery post-pandemic.
Despite challenges, industry leaders remain optimistic about future prospects once regulatory uncertainties settle. Nassetta noted, "Business thrives on certainty," anticipating positive outcomes once policy directions clarify.
The summit concluded with a unified call to prioritize practical immigration solutions that support industry growth while maintaining America's appeal as a global destination.
