ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The NFL has taken decisive action to protect players by unanimously approving a rule that prohibits the use of the hip-drop tackle technique.

In a vote on Monday, team owners endorsed the prohibition of this swivel tackle maneuver, which has been linked to a significant number of injuries in recent seasons. According to NFL executive Jeff Miller, the hip-drop tackle was employed 230 times last season alone, resulting in 15 players missing game time due to injuries.

The newly implemented rule will incur a 15-yard penalty for violators and could potentially lead to fines for offending players. NFL Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay emphasized the importance of safeguarding players, highlighting the vulnerability of runners targeted by this technique.

Although the NFL Players Association has voiced opposition to the rule, citing its infrequent use, proponents argue that its potential for harm outweighs its rarity. The league underscored its commitment to player safety by showcasing footage during a news conference, depicting instances where players like Drew Sample, Tony Pollard, Tyler Boyd, Geno Smith, and Ryan Tannehill were subjected to the now-outlawed hip-drop tackle.

While the rule's enforcement poses a challenge to officials, McKay assured teams that comprehensive guidance would be provided to ensure consistent application on the field. Additionally, the league plans to educate players and clubs on the rule's parameters through video demonstrations.

In addition to the ban on the hip-drop tackle, owners approved two other proposals aimed at refining gameplay mechanics. Teams will now have the opportunity to issue a third challenge following a successful initial challenge, streamlining the review process. Furthermore, a provision addressing double fouls during possessions was ratified, clarifying the sequence of enforcement in such scenarios.

Looking ahead, the league is contemplating further adjustments to gameplay, notably revisiting kickoff rules that could impact team strategies and player acquisitions in the upcoming NFL draft. The proposed changes draw inspiration from alternative football leagues like the XFL, with an emphasis on preserving the excitement of special teams play.

Beyond on-field regulations, the NFL is expanding its global footprint through the Global Markets Program, welcoming four new teams and five additional markets into the initiative. This strategic expansion underscores the league's commitment to cultivating international fan bases and brand awareness beyond the United States.
