Bayern Munich win Champions League
Bayern Munich overcame Paris St-Germain in a tightly contested Champions League final in Lisbon to claim the crown for the sixth time.
Bayern Munich have won the Champions League for a sixth time after Kingsley Coman’s header sealed a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon.
On the hour mark, Joshua Kimmich’s floated cross found the winger in space at the far post, and he nodded beyond PSG keeper Keylor Navas for what proved to be the winner. It was a deserved breakthrough for Hansi Flick’s side, who had taken control of the game after an even first half.
Neymar had the game’s first chance just before the 20-minute mark, drawing a double save from Manuel Neuer. Moments later, Robert Lewandowski’s shot on the turn beat Keylor Navas but strucka post. Ángel Di María then fired over for PSG after a clever one-two with Ander Herrera.
On the half hour, Navas saved sharply from Lewandowski’s close-range header and Bayern finished the first half on top. PSG almost grabbed the lead on the break, but Kylian Mbappé could not steer his shot past Neuer from Herrera’s cut-back.
PSG had chances to get back into the game but Mbappé failed to connect with Di María’s through ball, and Marquinhos drew another fine save from Neuer. There was controversy when Kimmich appeared to clip Mbappé’s heel in the area, but no penalty was given. In stoppage time, Neymar’s cross-shot squirmed across goal as time ran out for Thomas Tuchel’s team.
Victory moves Bayern above Barcelona and level with Liverpool in the all-time standings, behind only Milan (seven) and Real Madrid (13). PSG’s disappointment meant Marseille, in 1993, remained France’s only winners of the competition.
