The first Reggae Sumfest took place in 1993 and was organized by Robert Russell and Johnny Gourzong. Throughout its history, the most important and authentic names of Jamaican music have passed, which has meant a very important promotion movement of what many call 'Brand Jamaica'. Although it has also incorporated performances of other international stars of popular music of the planet such as Rihanna, Kanye West, Usher, Christopher Brown, Alicia Keys, Nicky Minaj, 50 Cent, Lionel Ritchie and many other international stars.

In 2016, DownSound Entertainment, led by music and media entrepreneur Joseph Bogdanovich, bought the Reggae Sumfest. Bogdanovich and his DownSound team managed to update and modernize the festival respecting the roots and authenticity of the event.
