US President Donald Trump has confirmed North Korean general Kim Yong-chol is flying to New York City to enter discussions concerning a summit between the US and Pyongyang.

Kim Yong-chol would be the highest-ranking North Korean to visit the United States in almost two decades, according to the sources.

Earlier, A US delegation arrived in North Korea on Sunday for preparatory talks ahead of a potential meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"Our United States team has arrived in North Korea to make arrangements for the Summit between Kim Jong Un and myself," Trump tweeted.

"I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day.
