Long before Grenada announced the inaugural edition of its Flower & Garden Festival, the Caribbean island had already built a solid reputation in the world of horticulture. In May 2026, the country won its 19th gold medal — the ninth consecutive one — at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London, a milestone that carries renewed significance now, ahead of the festival taking place on the island itself from November 8 to 15.

A milestone repeated year after year

Grenada's exhibit at Chelsea, titled "Isle of Spice: A Display of Tropical Flowers, Foliage and Spices," was presented in the show's iconic Great Pavilion and featured a vibrant combination of orchids, heliconias, ginger lilies, anthuriums, cocoa and nutmeg, elements representing Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The win reaffirmed the island as one of the Caribbean's most distinguished and consistent exhibitors at the event, organized annually by the Royal Horticultural Society since 1913 and drawing around 150,000 visitors each year, including members of the British Royal Family, international designers and media from around the world.

Official recognition

Grenada's Governor General, Dame Cécile La Grenade, was present in London to celebrate the result alongside the team. "This remarkable achievement is a testament to the dedication of our designers, horticulturists and all those who have worked tirelessly to showcase the natural beauty and rich floral heritage of our nation," she said. High Commissioner Racher Croney added that the result "reflects the creativity, resilience and excellence" of the Grenadian people, while Cathy John, head of the Chelsea team, described Pure Grenada as "more than a garden — it is our heritage in full bloom."

The bridge to the Flower & Garden Festival

What was once a standalone achievement ended up becoming the starting point for something bigger. Following the gold medal announcement, the Grenada High Commission and the Grenada Tourism Authority hosted a special reception in London called "Tropical Bloom," at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization, to officially launch the Grenada Flower & Garden Festival. There, Grenada Tourism Authority Chairman Randall Dolland was direct: "Our Tropical Flowers deserve a prominent place in the world's horticultural hierarchy, and Tropical Bloom sets out to carry that message to the world."

That festival, now confirmed for November 8–15, 2026, and set to include garden tours, a flower show at the Grenada Trade Centre and a National Beautification Competition, can today be read as the direct continuation of that international recognition earned months earlier in London.

A strategy with multiple goals

Grenada's sustained performance at Chelsea is not an isolated event, but part of a broader strategy to position the island as a destination for sustainable tourism, environmental protection and horticultural innovation. The 2026 edition of the Chelsea Flower Show also placed special emphasis on sustainability, biodiversity and climate resilience — priorities that align with Grenada's own environmental goals for international tourism.

With 19 accumulated gold medals and its own festival about to be held on home soil for the first time, Grenada cements its place as one of the Caribbean's most relevant floral and botanical destinations.
