Antonelli Wins British GP Sprint Ahead of Hamilton and Norris
Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed victory in Saturday's Sprint race at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, overtaking Lewis Hamilton in the second half of the race to extend his lead atop the Formula 1 drivers' championship. The Mercedes driver started from second on the grid, just 0.011 seconds behind Hamilton's pole-setting lap, and stayed within striking distance of the Ferrari before making the decisive move that sealed the win.
Hamilton, racing in front of his home crowd, held the lead through the opening laps but couldn't hold off Antonelli's charge, ultimately crossing the line in second place. Lando Norris rounded out the podium in third for McLaren, finishing well behind the top two. George Russell, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen completed the top six, while Oscar Piastri came home seventh and Liam Lawson picked up the final point on offer in eighth.
The Sprint format, which awards points only to the top eight finishers, produced an eventful opening lap that shaped much of the race. Sergio Pérez made contact with Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin early on, damaging his front wing and forcing an unscheduled pit stop; race stewards later handed him a ten-second penalty for the incident, leaving him at the back of the field.
Further down the order, the Alpine pairing of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto had contrasting fortunes across the race. Colapinto made up significant ground at the start before losing pace later on, eventually finishing just behind his teammate. Both drivers had qualified outside the points-paying positions on Friday, making their recovery through the field one of the storylines of the session.
With the result, Antonelli further consolidated his position at the top of the drivers' standings, building on a season in which the young Italian has emerged as one of the sport's breakout performers. Attention now turns to Saturday's qualifying session, which will set the grid for Sunday's 52-lap Grand Prix at Silverstone — one of the most historic stops on the Formula 1 calendar.
The main race on Sunday, July 5, will offer full championship points and a chance for Hamilton to respond in front of his home fans, while Antonelli looks to build on his growing advantage in the title race.
