Max Verstappen extended his championship hopes with a dramatic victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, a race overshadowed by the late-night disqualification of both McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. What began as a routine post-race procedure turned into one of the biggest twists of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Verstappen’s win originally kept him 42 points behind Norris with 58 still available in the final two rounds. But hours later, the championship picture was shaken when FIA stewards ruled that both McLarens failed the post-race technical inspection. The skid blocks on the underside of their MCL39s were found to be below the minimum thickness required by regulations.

With the ruling, Norris loses his second place and Piastri his fourth, elevating George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to the podium and delivering Verstappen an unexpected lifeline in his bid for a fifth consecutive world title. The Dutchman now sits just 24 points behind Norris, tied with Piastri heading into next weekend’s sprint-format Qatar Grand Prix.

McLaren released a brief statement explaining that unexpected aerodynamic bouncing—“porpoising”—combined with accidental damage may have caused excessive contact with the track surface. The FIA confirmed the infraction was not intentional.

For Norris, the setback comes at a critical moment. The Briton could still clinch the championship in Qatar if he outscores both Verstappen and Piastri by just two points over the weekend. But the psychological blow of losing 18 points so late in the season introduces a new layer of pressure in a title race that appeared nearly resolved just hours earlier.

Russell’s second place and Antonelli’s first career podium mark a strong weekend for Mercedes, while Haas celebrated a rare double-points finish with Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman closing out the top ten.

With Qatar and Abu Dhabi still ahead, the Las Vegas Grand Prix may well be remembered as the turning point of the 2025 championship—an event where the glitter of the Strip collided with one of the most consequential technical penalties in recent years.
