The Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, has decided to extend a nationwide lockdown to tackle the spread of the coronavirus, the Delhi state’s chief minister said on Saturday, without saying how long the extension would be.
The Prime Minister held forth on the issue at a high level video meet with political leaders today. He indicated at the meeting that most of the suggestions he has got so far are for an extension of the full lockdown, or for the lockdown to not be lifted in one go, in order to combat the spread of infection more efficiently.
The feedback taken by the 11 high powered committees, formed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, largely favours the extension of the lockdown to control novel coronavirus outbreak in India.
Although data has shown that the total number of cases in the country is slowing – with 4,053 new infections on Tuesday – the death toll remains at over 800 a day.
