Pope Leo XIV Celebrates Mass at Gemelli Hospital as Recovery Continues After Lung Surgery
ROME. Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass on Friday, October 16, at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic, where he remains hospitalized following surgery on his right lung. Images released by the Vatican show the Pontiff taking part in the religious service in a room prepared on the hospital’s tenth floor, offering an encouraging sign as he continues his postoperative recovery.
The Mass took place at noon local time, with medical and nursing staff who were off duty, as well as members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie Corps, in attendance. During his homily, the Pope thanked doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants for their daily work caring for patients and supporting them in moments of vulnerability. He also expressed his gratitude for the care they have provided to him during his hospitalization.
The latest medical update confirmed continued improvement in his overall condition. On Friday morning, Leo XIV underwent blood tests and a chest X-ray, both of which supported the positive assessment of his recovery. Respiratory physiotherapy sessions also continued. According to the Holy See, his postoperative progress now allows him to carry out his normal daily activities independently.
The 71-year-old Pontiff underwent surgery on Tuesday, October 13, to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after an adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, was identified. The procedure was completed as planned, with no immediate complications reported by the Vatican. Further analysis of the removed tissue is still awaited to determine whether additional treatment will be necessary.
Celebrating Mass inside the hospital marks another step in the Pope’s gradual return to some of his usual activities, although he remains under medical care. Attention is also focused on his upcoming schedule, including the possibility of appearing for the traditional Angelus prayer on Sunday, October 18. His medical team’s assessment and the progress of his recovery will help determine his next steps.
