The U.S. Travel Association sharply criticized the suspension of Global Entry operations during the ongoing partial federal government shutdown, warning that American travelers are being caught in political crossfire at a critical moment for mobility and economic stability.

U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman issued a forceful statement after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the Global Entry program would remain suspended while the partial shutdown continues.

“The suspension of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry is extremely disappointing,” Freeman said. “Travelers should be prioritized, not leveraged. Travel is the gateway to the American economy and Americans should not have their mobility, security or travel experience diminished because elected leaders fail to resolve their differences.”

While DHS initially indicated both Global Entry and TSA PreCheck would be closed, the agency later reversed course on PreCheck. Officials stated that operational adjustments would be made “case by case” depending on staffing levels.

The disruptions stem from a partial government shutdown that began on February 14 after lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on funding legislation for DHS. The political impasse has centered on immigration policy disagreements tied to former President Donald Trump’s deportation agenda.

The suspension comes at an especially sensitive time. A powerful winter storm is impacting the U.S. East Coast, triggering massive flight cancellations. Nearly nine out of ten departures from major hubs such as John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Logan International Airport were canceled for Monday as severe weather conditions intensified.

Industry leaders warn that the combination of extreme weather, aviation disruption, and security program instability could significantly affect traveler confidence and the broader U.S. travel economy.

Freeman concluded by urging policymakers to resolve the impasse quickly: “Travel is vital to the American people and it is time for policymakers to put the American people first.”
