Trump-Backed Nasry Asfura Declared President-Elect in Honduras
Honduras’ National Electoral Council (CNE) officially proclaimed Nasry “Tito” Asfura, candidate of the conservative National Party, as president-elect for the 2026–2030 term, following a closely contested general election marked by political tension and ongoing scrutiny of results.
The declaration was issued on December 24 while the special vote count was still underway, amid growing calls to bring the electoral process to a close. The presidential certification was endorsed by councilors Ana Paola Hall and Cossette López, along with substitute councilor Carlos Cardona, who emphasized that the declaration “does not decide, but rather certifies” the will expressed at the polls.
According to the official CNE document, with 18,757 polling station reports counted—equivalent to 97.86% of total tally sheets—Asfura secured 1,479,748 valid votes, confirming his lead in the presidential race. In the latest update, the president-elect held 1,481,517 votes (40.26%), narrowly ahead of Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party, who obtained 1,455,169 votes (39.54%). The CNE has until December 30 to finalize and certify the complete vote count.
In third place was Rixi Moncada, candidate of the ruling LIBRE Party, with 706,266 votes (19.19%), based on the scrutiny of 99.93% of the tally sheets. Moncada has rejected the results and formally requested the annulment of the elections, alleging irregularities.
Who is Nasry Asfura?
Known among supporters as “Papi a la orden,” Nasry Asfura achieved the presidency on his second attempt, leading the National Party’s return to power after a period of political erosion between 2010 and 2022, a time overshadowed by corruption and drug-trafficking allegations against former officials.
Born on June 8, 1958, in Tegucigalpa, Asfura is the son of parents of Palestinian origin. He served as mayor of the Central District (Tegucigalpa) for two consecutive terms from 2014 to 2022, and previously held roles as a municipal councilor and as secretary of the Honduran Social Investment Fund. Although he began studies in engineering, his professional career developed primarily in the construction sector.
Government Agenda and International Reactions
Asfura’s government plan, titled “Together We Will Be Fine 2026–2030,” prioritizes fiscal stability, job creation, and investment in productive infrastructure. His platform also includes strengthening the agricultural sector, improving national connectivity, and launching projects aimed at delivering immediate economic impact.
The election drew notable international attention. Prior to voting day on November 30, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Asfura via his Truth Social platform, portraying him as a defender of democracy and a key ally in combating drug trafficking in the region. Trump praised Asfura’s record as mayor of Tegucigalpa, citing infrastructure improvements and expanded access to potable water.
As Honduras awaits the final certification of results, Asfura’s victory signals a significant political shift in Central America, with implications for regional governance, economic policy, and international relations in the years ahead.
