Lionel Messi is set to arrive in India for a three-day visit that has already sparked a nationwide frenzy among football enthusiasts. The 38-year-old Argentine star will begin his GOAT Tour in Kolkata, a multi-city programme combining cultural engagements, sporting events, and high-profile meetings.
The highlight of the visit will be the unveiling of a 21-metre iron statue depicting Messi lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy. Crafted in just 40 days by sculptor Monti Paul, the monument will be inaugurated virtually due to security considerations. Kolkata has also opened the “Hola Messi” fan zone, featuring a life-size replica of Messi seated on a throne and an immersive recreation of his Miami home, complete with mannequins representing his family members.
Messi’s India itinerary includes significant encounters. The football legend will meet Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. Local sources also indicate that a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi remains under consideration, adding potential diplomatic relevance to the trip.
Indian fans are eagerly awaiting the football icon’s arrival. Samir Nandy, a 64-year-old supporter from Kolkata, described the moment as “a dream come true”. “Legends are shaped not only by success but also by resilience. That is what makes Messi extraordinary,” he said.
After his engagement in Kolkata, including a short exhibition match, Messi will travel to Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. In Hyderabad, he is scheduled to attend a concert in his honour and take part in another friendly match. His visit follows a new milestone in his career: winning his second consecutive Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player award, after leading Inter Miami to the league title and topping the scoring charts.
Messi’s arrival in India comes as he prepares to lead Argentina in the defence of its World Cup title at the 2026 tournament in North America. Ahead of the trip, Messi shared his enthusiasm: “India is a very special country. I have fond memories of my visit 14 years ago—the fans were incredible. I look forward to meeting a new generation of supporters and sharing my passion for this beautiful game.”
