The heat was intense when we arrived at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, a cultural and botanical gem located in Grand Rapids. With over 158 acres of gardens, greenhouses, and outdoor sculptures, the park is one of the most inspiring places in the American Midwest. On that sunny afternoon, we chose the best way to explore it: aboard an electric tram that allowed us to enjoy every corner without succumbing to the summer sun.

From the start, the tour immersed us in a space where art and nature coexist in perfect harmony. The Japanese Garden offered a peaceful escape with stone paths, wooden bridges, and koi-filled ponds. Sculptures thoughtfully integrated into the landscape interacted with the trees and water reflections. Works by artists like Rodin, Degas, Anish Kapoor, and Ai Weiwei surprised us at every turn.

Next, we entered the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory, the largest tropical greenhouse in Michigan. Amid comforting humidity, we found ourselves in a jungle of orchids, towering palms, hanging vines, ferns, and exotic flowers. Further along, the Carnivorous Plant House and Desert Garden transported us through ecosystems from around the world.

One of the most memorable moments was our visit to the Rooftop Sculpture Garden, an elevated terrace with panoramic views of the park and its contemporary sculptures. The contrast between steel artworks and lush greenery under the setting sun created unforgettable images.

Frederik Meijer Gardens is more than a park — it’s a living museum, a place where every plant, every artwork, and every path invites reflection and wonder. Despite the heat, it was a truly sensory and aesthetic experience that will stay with us forever.
