Vatican City, April 22, 2025. — Pope Francis, who died Monday at age 88 following a stroke and cardiac arrest, is lying in state at the Santa Marta residence, where he lived during his 12-year pontificate. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square, to be celebrated by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the 91-year-old dean of the College of Cardinals.

The Argentine pontiff, the first from Latin America, had been hospitalized earlier this year with double pneumonia and seemed to be recovering. However, the Vatican said his death came quickly and without suffering. He passed away at 7:35 a.m. on Monday.

On Tuesday, cardinals convened at the Vatican to arrange the funeral and burial, and to begin preparations for the conclave that will elect his successor. As per tradition during the “interregnum” period, all beatifications and canonizations, including the planned canonization of Carlo Acutis, have been suspended.

Francis’ body will be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, where the faithful will have the opportunity to pay their respects. In a break with papal tradition, Francis requested to be buried in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, rather than in St. Peter’s tomb.

World leaders are expected to attend the funeral, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Argentine President Javier Milei, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Global expressions of mourning continue. In Jakarta, Indonesia, hundreds of Catholics gathered at the Apostolic Nunciature under the rain to offer condolences, recalling Pope Francis’ 2024 visit as a symbol of humility and interfaith respect.
