Shipwreck Park: Diving Paradise amidst Sunken Ships in Pompano Beach
Shipwreck Park in Pompano Beach is an underwater paradise and one of the most accessible diving sites in North America, catering to divers of all skill levels..
In the heart of Pompano Beach, in Greater Fort Lauderdale, lies a submerged treasure that attracts diving enthusiasts from around the world: Shipwreck Park. This underwater park, comprised of a series of 16 different wrecks, underwater art exhibits, and coral reefs, not only offers thrilling experiences for divers but also plays a crucial role in preserving the local marine ecosystem.
Rita Wells, Tourism Marketing Manager for the City of Pompano Beach, provides details about this fascinating destination: "Shipwreck Park is an underwater paradise just a mile off the coast. This submerged cemetery, adorned with sunken artworks, is one of the most accessible diving sites in North America, catering to divers of all levels." Funded by a non-profit organization, the park aims to expand its offerings and provide new habitats for marine life while alleviating pressure on nearby natural reefs.
One of the park's highlights is the unique underwater casino, which hosts an annual submerged poker game. Caitlan Etchevers, Business and Global Travel Trade Manager for Visit Lauderdale, notes the significant growth Pompano Beach has experienced in recent years, turning it into a bustling destination with a wide variety of attractions, shops, and restaurants.
The centerpiece of Shipwreck Park is the Lady Luck, a 324-foot tanker intentionally sunk in 2016. Before its sinking, the ship was adorned with casino-themed artworks, including card sharks and a chorus line octopus. Another notable wreck is the Okinawa, a military tugboat adorned with sculptures by Dennis McDonald, including a replica of the Okinawa mermaid, a highly sought-after piece also replicated at the Pompano Beach tourist information office.
The Midnight Sun dive bar offers a unique underwater experience, with marine creatures and a magical mermaid holding a "Globe Globe" to view divers' reflections. Additionally, divers can explore the Lady Luck, which has become a haven for marine life and one of the largest artificial reefs in South Florida.
Shipwreck Park's strategic location, coupled with pier revitalization efforts and the growing number of hotels and restaurants in Pompano Beach, position it as an ideal tourist destination for both day visits and full vacations. This underwater gem not only offers thrilling adventures but also promotes awareness of the importance of preserving our natural coral reefs. With its exciting underwater events and art exhibitions, Shipwreck Park continues to be one of the country's premier diving destinations.
