Kimi Antonelli strengthened his position at the top of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship with a controlled victory in the inaugural Madrid Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit.

The Mercedes driver started second on the grid behind Lando Norris, but a strategically decisive Virtual Safety Car period changed the complexion of the race. Norris missed the opportunity to pit during the neutralization, while Antonelli and several of his main rivals stopped at the right moment. The Mercedes driver emerged in a highly competitive position and ultimately took control of the race.

Antonelli crossed the finish line ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, claiming his eighth victory of the 2026 season. The result further strengthened his championship campaign, with his lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell growing to 81 points after the Madrid round.

Verstappen secured second place for Red Bull, while Norris completed the podium after starting from pole position. Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari and Russell was fifth. Liam Lawson took sixth, while Argentina’s Franco Colapinto completed the top seven for Alpine.

For Colapinto, seventh place represented another important result in his 2026 campaign. The Argentine started ninth after an impressive qualifying performance at the brand-new Madrid circuit and managed to convert that starting position into a points finish in a race where overtaking opportunities were limited.

The inaugural Madrid Grand Prix also produced several dramatic moments. Lewis Hamilton retired early after suffering brake problems, while Carlos Sainz was forced to abandon his home race. Fernando Alonso finished 17th after a difficult afternoon for the Spanish drivers.

Madrid’s arrival adds a new dimension to the Formula 1 calendar, with the Madring becoming the sport’s latest new venue. The circuit produced a strategically intense first Grand Prix, while Antonelli’s victory further underlined his status as one of the defining young drivers of the 2026 season.

With another win added to his remarkable campaign, Antonelli leaves Madrid with an increasingly commanding championship advantage. Colapinto, meanwhile, continues to build momentum at Alpine after another strong points-scoring performance.
