Punta Cana, Dominican Republic – Hidden beneath the lush tropical landscape of Punta Cana, Sacred River at Bávaro Adventure Park offers visitors an unforgettable journey through crystal-clear underground waters while immersing them in the history and spirituality of the island's first inhabitants.

During a recent visit, ABC MUNDIAL toured the attraction with Héctor Ureña, Director of Sales & Marketing at Bávaro Adventure Park, who explained how the project transformed a natural underground river into one of the Dominican Republic's most distinctive tourism experiences.

"The river has always been here. We spent two years adapting it for visitors while preserving its natural ecosystem and working alongside geologists and experts in Taíno history," Ureña said.

The result is an experience that combines adventure with cultural storytelling. Along ecological trails leading to the cave entrance, visitors encounter sculptures and interpretive displays dedicated to the Taíno zemís, the spiritual deities worshipped by the island's indigenous people before the arrival of Europeans.

"We wanted guests not only to enjoy swimming through Sacred River, but also to leave with a deeper understanding of the Dominican Republic, its history, and the culture that existed long before colonization," he explained.

The adventure takes visitors approximately 13 meters (43 feet) below ground, where they enter an impressive cave system filled with naturally turquoise waters. Parts of the journey are completed on foot while others require swimming, creating an immersive encounter with one of the island's hidden natural wonders.

"Entering Sacred River feels like stepping outside of time," Ureña said. "Every visit is different because nature is constantly changing, and the energy of the place makes each experience unique."

A Completely Different Experience After Sunset

One of the park's newest attractions is the Sacred River Night Experience, offered every Tuesday and Saturday.

After dark, the underground adventure takes on an entirely different atmosphere as the trail is illuminated by torchlight, creating an almost mystical ambiance beneath the Caribbean sky.

Following the river tour, guests enjoy a live saxophone performance surrounded by nature before sitting down to a three-course surf-and-turf dinner beside the park's waterfall pool. The evening concludes with music, a DJ, dancing and an open bar.

"They're two completely different experiences," Ureña said. "Many guests visit during the day and then decide to upgrade and return for the nighttime experience because the park transforms completely."

Celebrating Dominican Heritage

Beyond its natural beauty, Sacred River was designed to introduce visitors to the island's indigenous heritage.

Throughout the experience, guests discover stories about Yaya, one of the principal Taíno deities, along with educational displays explaining the beliefs, traditions and symbolism of the Taíno people in an engaging and accessible way for both adults and children.

Rather than simply offering another adventure activity, the attraction connects visitors with an important chapter of Dominican history through an immersive natural setting.

Tips for Visitors

Guests are encouraged to arrive wearing comfortable clothing, a swimsuit, athletic shoes or water shoes, and to bring a towel and a change of clothes. Since portions of the experience involve both walking and swimming, appropriate footwear is recommended for safety and comfort.

Reservations for the Sacred River Night Experience can be made through the park's official website, participating hotels in Punta Cana, or Bávaro Adventure Park's social media channels.

By combining adventure, conservation, culture and innovation, Bávaro Adventure Park continues to redefine outdoor experiences in the Dominican Republic, offering travelers an opportunity to discover a side of Punta Cana that extends far beyond its world-famous beaches.
