U.S. President Joe Biden said on Monday he has resurrected a plan to raise refugee admissions this year to 62,500 after drawing a wave of criticism from supporters for initially keeping the refugee cap at a historically low level.

President Joe Biden has lifted the US annual refugee cap, bowing to backlash from his party after he initially opted to stick by the Trump-era figure.

The Democratic president is raising the cap from 15,000 to 62,500 amid outrage from progressives and refugee agencies.

Mr Biden said the lower figure "did not reflect America's values".

Reports last month said he was concerned about letting in more people amid a record influx at the US-Mexico border.

The new figure of 62,500 "erases the historically low number" set by former President Donald Trump, Mr Biden said on Monday.

Mr Biden also said his administration intends to raise this number next year to 125,000 refugees admitted.

But he acknowledged the US will not actually achieve 62,500 refugee admissions this year, arguing that his administration had to "undo the damage" of the previous one.

The Biden administration has consistently directed blame for the problems at the border on the Trump administration, with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki calling the immigration system left behind by Mr Trump "dismantled" and "unworkable".
