Lai, the favored candidate in Taiwan's January presidential elections, is officially making transit stops in the U.S. on his way to and from Paraguay for the upcoming inauguration of its president.
The ruling Democrative Progressive Party is seeking re-election and an absolute majority in the legislature. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has named as her running mate for 2020 elections a former prime minister who last year angered Beijing so badly with his support for the island’s formal independence that a major Chinese paper called for his arrest.
