Pompano Beach, on Florida’s southeastern coast, offers an experience that allows first-time divers to combine learning, practice and underwater exploration in a single adventure. The “Dive in a Day” experience, offered by South Florida Diving Headquarters in partnership with Sands Harbor Resort and Marina, begins in a swimming pool, where beginners learn the fundamentals of scuba diving before heading out into the ocean to explore a natural reef and a nearby shipwreck.

The experience is part of Pompano Beach’s growing adventure tourism offering. Located between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, the destination is known for its sandy beaches, warm waters and exceptional diving opportunities. Pompano Beach has earned the nickname “Wreck Capital of Florida” thanks to the number of shipwrecks and artificial reefs located offshore.

The adventure starts in a controlled environment. In the pool, beginners can become familiar with scuba equipment and learn the basics before heading into the open ocean. The next step is a boat excursion to explore some of the underwater landscapes that have made Pompano Beach a popular diving destination. The official tourism information specifically highlights the combination of introductory pool training followed by an afternoon excursion to a reef and wreck.

Underwater, Pompano Beach offers an impressive marine landscape. Shipwreck Park features 18 wreck sites, including the Lady Luck and Okinawa, which have been transformed into artificial reefs and marine habitats. The Okinawa, located at depths ranging from 35 to 70 feet, is described as suitable for both novice and experienced divers.

Another iconic site is the SS Copenhagen, a steamship that ran aground in 1900 and is now listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Its location alongside the reef offers divers the opportunity to experience both the historic wreck and the marine life that has developed around it.

The proximity of the reefs is another major attraction. According to Visit Pompano Beach, the Broward County and Pompano Beach area has approximately 23 miles of coral reef accessible within half a mile of the coast. The linear reef system also makes drift diving possible, a local approach sometimes referred to as “valet diving.”
