ARLINGTON, Texas — Norway reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in its history after defeating Ivory Coast 2-1 in a dramatic Round of 32 match on Tuesday, thanks to a late winner from Erling Haaland.

The Manchester City striker scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute, calmly guiding the ball over the line after a precise pass from Patrick Berg. The victory secured Norway's place in the Round of 16, where it will face five-time world champion Brazil on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Norway took the lead in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa, whose curling right-footed strike beat goalkeeper Yahia Fofana to give the Scandinavians a deserved advantage before halftime. Ivory Coast responded in the 74th minute when Amad Diallo finished a well-worked move with Nicolas Pépé to level the score and briefly shift the momentum.

However, Haaland once again proved decisive on football's biggest stage. The goal marked his fifth of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving him just one behind Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the tournament's scoring race. It also extended Haaland's remarkable international scoring streak to 13 consecutive competitive matches and increased his record tally for Norway to 60 goals in just 53 appearances.

Despite intense pressure from Ivory Coast during stoppage time, including a dangerous free kick from Diallo, goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland produced a crucial save to preserve Norway's historic victory. Head coach Ståle Solbakken praised his team's composure after conceding the equalizer, highlighting the players' ability to regain control and finish the match strongly.

The victory represents another milestone for Norwegian football. Playing in only its fourth FIFA World Cup, Norway advanced beyond the knockout stage for the first time and will now face Brazil in a highly anticipated Round of 16 clash. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast exits the tournament after an impressive campaign that showcased one of the youngest and most promising squads in the competition.
