Zohran Mamdani Makes History: First Muslim Mayor of New York Defeats Andrew Cuomo
NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2025 – Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, 34, has been elected as the 111th Mayor of New York City, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, in a landmark victory that marks a new chapter in the city’s political history.
With more than 50% of the vote, Mamdani became New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, as well as its youngest leader in over a century. Cuomo, running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, finished second with just over 40%.
Mamdani’s triumph was part of a wave of Democratic victories nationwide, including Abigail Spanberger’s win as Virginia’s first female governor and Mikie Sherrill’s victory in New Jersey.
At his election night rally at Brooklyn Paramount, supporters erupted in celebration as major networks called the race. “This is a victory for every New Yorker who believes this city belongs to all of us,” Mamdani said.
His grassroots campaign, powered by small-dollar donations, young volunteers, and a bold progressive platform, focused on freezing rents, expanding affordable housing, raising the minimum wage to $30 an hour, and making public transit free.
Mamdani’s rise from a Queens state assembly member to mayoral frontrunner was fueled by support from progressives like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as key endorsements from Kathy Hochul, Jerry Nadler, Letitia James, and Hakeem Jeffries.
Despite strong backing, Mamdani faced intense attacks, including Islamophobic smears and criticisms over his support for Palestinian rights. Former President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk both endorsed Cuomo in the final days, warning against a “radical” mayor.
Born in Uganda to Indian parents, Mamdani moved to New York at age seven and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. His message of inclusion and equality resonated with voters seeking change.
“Tonight, the city chose hope over fear,” Mamdani posted on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a video captioned: “Next stop: City Hall.”
