Colombia and Tampa Bay Celebrate New Air Connection Bringing Colombians Closer to St. Pete/Clearwater
The connection between Colombia and the United States continues to strengthen with the inauguration of Avianca's new direct flight between Bogotá and Tampa, a milestone marking the first nonstop route from South America to Tampa International Airport (TPA). This achievement was celebrated with a special event attended by prominent representatives from the tourism and business sectors.
Brian Lowack, President and CEO of Visit St. Pete-Clearwater, presented a welcome gift to Rolando Damas, Avianca's Managing Director for North and Central America, highlighting the importance of this new route for regional tourism. "St. Pete-Clearwater is pleased to welcome Colombian travelers to explore our world-class beaches, art, coastal cuisine, and diverse outdoor activities," said Lowack.
The inaugural event at TPA featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, live music from the Carnaval de Barranquilla Tampa, and the participation of industry leaders, including Santiago Corrada, President and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay, who stated, "This flight connects Colombians with the flavors, culture, and attractions that make Tampa Bay a must-visit destination."
Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, also attended and emphasized the positive impact of the new connection. "The launch of Avianca’s Tampa-Bogotá route strengthens the bond between Colombia and the United States, fostering deeper commercial, tourism, and cultural ties. This new route is more than just a flight; it’s an invitation for Florida’s west coast to discover Colombia, the Land of Beauty," she said.
Joe Lopano, CEO of Tampa International Airport, highlighted the strategic importance of the route, noting that Bogotá has been one of the most requested international destinations by travelers in the region. "With Avianca, we are now offering direct flights to South America for the first time, giving our residents unmatched access to Colombia and beyond," Lopano stated.
The flight, operated on an Airbus A320neo with 180 seats, will offer four weekly frequencies and connect with over 20 destinations in South America. The addition of this route strengthens Avianca's presence in the United States and expands tourism and trade opportunities between both countries.
