For the first time in more than 25 years, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed a decisive victory in Delhi’s state legislature elections, marking a major political shift in the country’s capital.

The BJP won 47 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had governed the region since 2015. The AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, secured only 22 seats, while the final result for one seat remains pending, according to the Election Commission of India. The Congress party, India’s main opposition force, failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive election cycle.

Senior BJP leader and India’s Home Minister Amit Shah called the election outcome a testament to “people’s faith in Prime Minister Modi’s vision of progress.” He further promised to transform Delhi into the world’s leading capital city.
