For the first time in more than 25 years, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed a decisive victory in Delhi’s state legislature elections, marking a major political shift in the country’s capital.

The BJP won 47 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had governed the region since 2015. The AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, secured only 22 seats, while the final result for one seat remains pending, according to the Election Commission of India. The Congress party, India’s main opposition force, failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive election cycle.

A Major Political Upset

In an unexpected turn of events, AAP founder and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal lost his seat, along with his deputy, Manish Sisodia. Despite the party’s strong support base, built on welfare policies and an anti-corruption agenda, Kejriwal’s leadership was unable to withstand the BJP’s aggressive campaign.

Kejriwal, who had been jailed last year on corruption charges—allegations he has denied—acknowledged the election results. “We humbly accept the people’s mandate,” he said in a video statement. “We will continue serving the people as a responsible opposition.”

Meanwhile, BJP supporters flooded the streets outside the party’s headquarters in Delhi, waving flags and celebrating their victory. Senior BJP leader and India’s Home Minister Amit Shah called the election outcome a testament to “people’s faith in Prime Minister Modi’s vision of progress.” He further promised to transform Delhi into the world’s leading capital city.

BJP’s Political Comeback

The BJP’s success in Delhi marks a significant resurgence for the ruling party after it failed to secure an outright majority in last year’s national elections. While Modi retained power through coalition partners, this victory strengthens the BJP’s grip ahead of upcoming state elections.

Ahead of the vote, Modi’s administration introduced key economic measures, including income tax cuts for the salaried middle class, a major voting bloc. The campaign focused on infrastructure, education reforms, and healthcare improvements, with both Modi and Kejriwal promising enhanced public services, free electricity, and stipends for women in need.

The Future of Delhi Politics

Kejriwal’s arrest and subsequent release on bail sparked widespread criticism from opposition parties, who accused Modi’s government of using federal agencies to suppress political rivals. Despite the setback, AAP remains a formidable political force with a dedicated base in Delhi.

While the BJP’s victory shifts the political landscape of the capital, the long-term impact of this election will depend on how effectively the party delivers on its promises. As Modi’s party celebrates its landmark win, all eyes are now on how this shift will influence India’s broader political future.
