Jonathan Daniels, Chief Executive and Port Director of Port Everglades, expressed optimism about the season, suggesting the possibility of surpassing the record of 4 million passengers. Although the official projection is conservatively set at around 3.7 million passengers embarking and disembarking, the reality could exceed these expectations.

Port Everglades, located in Fort Lauderdale, has kicked off the highly anticipated 2023-2024 cruise season by opening its doors to new cruise lines and ships, solidifying its position as a leading port in the industry. This year is particularly special as it becomes the annual homeport for Disney Cruise Line, marking a strategic partnership that promises to add a magical touch to the cruise experience.

The diversification of the cruise offerings is evident with the arrival of luxury ships, such as those from Viking and Ritz-Carlton, as well as shorter itineraries offered by Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and, in an exciting development, Disney. Starting from November 20, 2023, the Disney Dream will establish its year-round homeport in a terminal specially designed for Disney Cruise Line guests. This long-term agreement will support local jobs and generate significant revenue for the region.

Celebrity Ascent from Celebrity Cruises, the fourth ship in the Celebrity's Edge Series, makes its debut at Port Everglades, conducting inaugural itineraries in the Caribbean. Silver Nova, the latest luxury ship from Silversea Cruises, will be christened on January 4, 2024, and stands out as the first to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the primary fuel at Port Everglades.

The fleet of Royal Caribbean International also joins the season with the transfer of the Oasis-class Symphony of the Seas, alternating between 6- and 8-night Caribbean cruises. Azamara, the luxury cruise line, makes its debut at Port Everglades with the arrival of the Azamara Onward on November 30, 2023. Additionally, an exciting inaugural 155-night global journey is set to commence on January 5, 2024.

Looking ahead, Princess Cruises plans to establish the Sun Princess as a homeport at Port Everglades from October 2024. This ship, the first of the new Sphere class from the line, will be powered by LNG and is expected to accommodate over 4,000 guests.

In an effort to advance environmental initiatives, Port Everglades has concluded a study to incorporate shore power at its cruise terminals. This project, allowing cruise ships to use electricity instead of burning fuel while inactive, has a projected cost of approximately $160 million and is expected to be funded through federal and state funds, contributions from cruise lines, and Broward County. Implementation will occur in phases, possibly starting in 2024 and concluding by late 2027. This advancement aims to solidify Port Everglades as a leader in sustainability in the cruise industry.
