India: Rajasthan logs more than 5,000 daily Covid-19 cases on Sunday, active cases near 20,000
Restrictions imposed in several states in India as Covid-19 cases rise.
India reported 159,632 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, as the Omicron variant of the coronavirus continues to spread rapidly in the country, nudging several state governments to impose fresh restrictions.
Weekend curfew in Rajasthan
Rajasthan recorded 5,660 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours on Sunday, taking the total number of active cases in the state to 19,467. This is a steep rise from the figures on Saturday when Rajasthan reported 4,108 fresh cases in 24 hours and an active case count of 14,166.
Of the 5,660 fresh cases logged in the state on Sunday, 2,377 were reported in Jaipur alone, as per a report by the state health department. Jodhpur registered 600 new cases while Alwar logged 364 and Udaipur 312 in the same 24 hours.
The state also registered one Covid-19 death on Sunday, taking the total reported Covid toll in Rajasthan to 8,972.
On account of a surge in Covid cases, the Ashok Gehlot-led state government announced the imposition of weekend curfew in Rajasthan. The weekend curfew, which will come into effect from the coming week onwards, bars movement between 11 pm on Saturday and 5 am on Monday.
The state government has also ordered an immediate stop to offline school activities for children in Classes 1 to 12 till January 30.
